PEEL in primary schools

Although PEEL started in a secondary school and initially spread to a several other secondary settings, by the mid 1990s PEEL ideas were being successfully applied in primary school classroms. Some very exciting ideas are now being developed by a number of teachers at all levels from Prep to Grade 6. On October 12th and 14th 2005 around 20 primary school teachers spent a day documenting their practice with reference to developing improved learning environments in their classrooms. It is intended that this will be the core of a new book on  Effective Learning in primary classooms.

A network of primary school teachers meets several times a year. Recent meetings in 2006 and 2007 have focused on Maths and Science in the primary classroom and more recently, Creativity and Play in the classroom.

The chart below was developed in a primary PEEL network meeting and aims to show the kinds of learning and behaviours aimed for in a primary classroom using PEEL principles.

The following image illustrates one of the uses of PEEL in a prep classroom. this assists students in independent decison making.
